Food for the Soul

Chicken noodle soup or wanton noodle soup is what I prepare when someone in the family is not in a very well condition or mood.  It somehow brings some form or measure of comfort to us.

Filipino comfort foods are mostly soups. Maybe because it is fulfilling yet easily digestible, just perfect for someone who is not in the mood to eat much. It seems that food is not just to appease hunger. It can affect our mood as well.

Several researchers have either demonstrated or speculated that links exist between physical or psychological aspects associated with mood and the consumption of particular foods. Food that tastes good may promote the release of endogenous opioids and thereby alter one’s mood state. There is also evidence that foods high in carbohydrates increase the availability of tryptophan, which increases the level of serotonin in the brain and results in a better mood state. There are some healthy foods too that are mood alleviators like nuts and fish. They help to improve your mood and alleviate stress. (source)

Now we know that not only soups are the food for the soul that can keep us alive and get us through a bad day.

Observing Lent

Holy Week in the Christian year is the week immediately before Easter. On Ash Wednesday, Catholics begin the forty-day season called Lent which precedes the celebration of Easter, Christ’s resurrection from the dead.

It is during this season that Filipino Christians are reminded of their cultural heritage and it is the best time to reflect on their lives. I remember when we were still living in the province, my whole family used to participate in our town procession, pray the 14 station of the cross and attend mass on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Now, we are not practicing the same but still observing the Lent so I won’t be online from Maundy Thursday until Good Friday. All posts that you will read here on those days are all scheduled posts. No blog hopping, no Facebook, Twitter, etc. But I promise that I will visit as much site as I can on Black Saturday onwards.

“What then is the justice of Christ?
Above all, it is the justice that comes from grace,
where it is not man who makes amends,
heals himself and others.”

Enhance Your Self-Confidence and Life Style

In this fast-paced demanding world, people aged faster. When the body is wracked with anxiety and tension and when the mind is filled with worry and frustration, wrinkles are more likely to appear everywhere. This is just one of the many reasons why people are undergoing plastic surgery, to correct or restore what they once had to please themselves. This is something they believe will enhance their lives before they go forward with it.

Whether you are considering cosmetic or reconstructive surgery, you would want it to be done of course by a skilled cosmetic surgeon. There are many plastic surgery procedures but the breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is the fastest growing area of plastic surgery for the past 10 years. Women are very self-conscious about their breasts and many worry about their breast size that is why those who are brave are willing to go under the knife and have implants. Los Angeles breast augmentation using both saline and silicone implants approved by the FDA, that have been determined to be safe and effective. They can give you the breast volume or size you desire.

Size is not the only issue with breasts though, shape and contour are important too. During pregnancy, breasts grow and stay bigger as long as you breast feed. Once the breastfeeding is over, the breasts will be back to its normal size but not to its original shape. This is the problem of most breastfeeding moms not to mention the excess skin and fat and decreased tone of the muscles around the belly area. If you want your tummies and breasts back the way they looked before pregnancy, you should have a Mommy Makeover. The surgeons will determine the best approach to your body through your body type and overall health tips. This can sometimes be done during one surgery though.

The Rock

Rating: 8/10

The Rock is a 1996 action film that primarily takes place on Alcatraz Island, and the San Francisco Bay area. It was directed by Michael Bay, and stars three great Hollywood actors, Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage, and Ed Harris. What a cast!

Francis Hummel (Ed Harris) seizes Alcatraz Island and takes 81 tourists hostage in the prison cells, threatening the Pentagon with launching the rockets against the population of San Francisco unless the government pays ransom and reparations to the families of Marines who died on illegal, clandestine missions. The Pentagon and FBI develop a plan to retake the island with a Navy SEAL team, enlisting chemical weapons expert Stanley Goodspeed (Nicolas Cage).

In need of first-hand knowledge of Alcatraz, the FBI Director, is forced to turn to prisoner John Mason (Sean Connery), the only inmate of Alcatraz to ever successfully escape. Though Mason escapes custody and leads the FBI on a high-speed chase through the streets of San Francisco to see his estranged daughter, Goodspeed convinces him to aid the mission.

The film ends with Goodspeed and his pregnant bride Carla in Fort Walton, Kansas, on the advice of a note from Mason, recovering the microfilm with a half century of state secrets. (source)

I so admire Sean Connery and I love Nicholas Cage. They are both known as two of the Hollywood’s greatest. Casting them together in a film is a blast. What really works is the chemistry between Connery, as a reluctant warrior who has all the skills necessary to outsmart and outfight the occupying force, and Cage, as the nerd who can disarm the rockets but is not much in the killing department. This is more than just an action movie, this is a movie with a heart.

Support the Earth Hour

I won’t be online from 8:30 to 9:30 tonight as we will support Earth Hour. Earth Hour is an annual global event organized by World Widelife Fund, where citizens and governments around the world turn off lights for one hour to make a statement about the global warming. As our support, we will not only turn off the lights but other appliances as well.
Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s near-surface air and oceans. This is due to green house gases, which trap in the sun’s infrared rays in the earth’s atmosphere, which in turn heat up the earth’s atmosphere.
The global warming affects the season cycle. These past years, there are drastic changes in temperatures and weathers. The summers are getting longer than the winters and  there are also unpredictable heavy rains in some areas resulting to flash floods. It is also believed to be the cause of glacier retreat, species extinctions and spread of tropical diseases.
There are many things you can do today to reduce your own adding on to this problem. Using energy more efficiently can help to reduce global warming emissions. Support the earth hour and show that you care about the climate change.
