Weird Yet Fascinating

Before I learned about Chuck (Zachary Levi) and aside from Brad Pitt, Nicholas Cage is my most-loved in Hollywood. I know some people hate him because of his weird and crazy acts like having odd collections of stuffed lizards, snakes and octopus, having his own pyramid tomb where he plans to be buried, naming his son after his Kryptonian hero Luke Cage (that’s where he got his screen name too), etc. Weird ehh? Yes, sometimes he’s playing offbeat and sometimes he’s bizarrely over-the-top characters, but who cares? He is a very good actor and can portray different characters very well (the pictures below will speak for it). Because of that, he earned his reputation. I loved him more when he played the role on Stanley Godspeed in “The Rock” and I love his character as Cameron Poe, a US Ranger and newly released ex convict that’s trapped in a prisoner transport plane, in Con Air.

Nicholas Cage in Ghost Rider
in The Rock
in Con Air
in Sorcerer’s Apprentice

Nicolas Cage may be genuinely weird and strange but he is fascinating. There’s no one else like him in Hollywood. Do you know that his real name is Nicholas Kim Coppola? He was born on January 7, 1964 in Long Beach, California, USA. No, I am not a stalker. Just an avid fan.

The Sound of Music

My Rating: 8/10

Weird eeh?! To think that it is a musical that was filmed on 1965. So why The Sound of Music and not a movie that was just shown recently?

My daughter RJ got a DVD of The Sound of Music from the file of DVDs left by her Ninang Ache who migrated to Germany. She played it and because she is a natural music lover, she liked it. She played it over and over while dancing and singing with Fraulein Maria and the Family Von Trapp. Maria is a novice who left an Austrian convent and became a governess to the 7 mischievous children of a Naval officer widower Capt. Georg Von Trapp. Maria fell in-love with Capt. Von Trapp who was about to marry a Baroness. But the captain found himself falling in-love with Maria as well. To make the long story short, they got married and lived happily ever after.

I have seen this musical years ago and did not like it. How come my daughter, an 8 year old girl, liked it sooo much? I got intrigued so I sat and watched with her the other day. It was only then that I appreciate it. You can feel the romance…the music and cinematography are top notch. Watching my daughter dancing and seeing her with such happiness while singing made me appreciate more the Sound of Music. It is sure is one of the best films of all time…a film that is perfect for our TCP theme today, familial love.

Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit

Welcome to the “Year of the Rabbit”, the year that believed to create the visibility of energetic and carefree period. Because 2011 is year of the rabbit, we will start the Tuesday Couch Potato with movies about or with rabbit.

My rating: 7/10

Have you heard of Wallace and Gromit? They are clay characters in British animated short films. I first met them when I bought RJ a cartoon CD when she was still a baby. It was a 12-in-1 CD with Wallace and Gromit. Wallace, an absent-minded inventor living in Wigan, Greater Manchester, is a cheese enthusiast (especially for Wensleydale). His companion, Gromit, is an anthropomorphic intelligent dog. RJ loved them so much that when I heard about “Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit“, I bought the CD again. Of course Mommy always join the baby in watching. In this film, Wallace and his loyal dog, Gromit, set out to discover the mystery behind the garden sabotage that plagues their village and threatens the annual giant vegetable growing contest.

It is a mix of humor and clay motion. Funny and colorful just like Chicken Run. It feels good to watch great films like this with the whole family but you will enjoy “Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit” best if you have seen the short films. So I suggest watch the short films first.

Despicable Me

Family Adventure Movies is our theme for this week and for that I chose Despicable Me, a computer-animated 3D comedy film.  The characters may not be blood-related but after their adventures they settle down to live a happy life as a family.

Gru (voiced by Carell), the man who wants to still the moon, delights in all things wicked. He adopted three orphan girls, Margo, Editha and Agnes, and uses them as pawns for stealing the shrink ray from his opponent vector. He needs the shrink ray for his grand scheme and that is stealing the moon. However, his adventures with the little girls changed him. The world’s greatest villain became the most loving Dad.

Despicable Me is goofy but not overly loud, hilarious yet heart-warming. Hubby and I enjoyed it with RJ. For that I will rate it 8/10.

Seven (1995)

My Rating: 8.5/10

I have watched many Morgan Freeman films but what I like the most is his biggest hit Seven. I remember I watched this movie with my officemates when I got my very first paycheck. Freeman is at his best at Seven. Plus Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman in one movie, that is something!
Seven is police drama about two police detectives, one new (Brad Pitt as David Mills) and one about to retire (Morgan Freeman as William Somerset) . They are deeply involved in a case of a  serial killer using the seven deadly sins as his modus operandi; Gluttony, Envy, Lust, Pride Sloth, Greed and Wrath.
I like Morgan Freeman’s character as Detective Lt. William Somerset. He adapted very well to his role and was very convincing. I think he is now on his 70’s. His film that I have last seen was Evan Almighty. Though he acted very well in that film too, I love him on deeper and darker roles like that of his character as smart detective where he can combine the best of his skills.
