Food for the Soul

Chicken noodle soup or wanton noodle soup is what I prepare when someone in the family is not in a very well condition or mood.  It somehow brings some form or measure of comfort to us.

Filipino comfort foods are mostly soups. Maybe because it is fulfilling yet easily digestible, just perfect for someone who is not in the mood to eat much. It seems that food is not just to appease hunger. It can affect our mood as well.

Several researchers have either demonstrated or speculated that links exist between physical or psychological aspects associated with mood and the consumption of particular foods. Food that tastes good may promote the release of endogenous opioids and thereby alter one’s mood state. There is also evidence that foods high in carbohydrates increase the availability of tryptophan, which increases the level of serotonin in the brain and results in a better mood state. There are some healthy foods too that are mood alleviators like nuts and fish. They help to improve your mood and alleviate stress. (source)

Now we know that not only soups are the food for the soul that can keep us alive and get us through a bad day.

The most widely accepted comfort food universally is chicken soup. Chinese attest to the beneficial effects of chicken soup to the body. Even in the West, chicken soup is used for people recovering from sickness. Some say that it also promotes long life and general well being. Ako, I love chicken tinola the most. Lalo kapag umuulan at malamig. Nakakapagpagaan nang pakirandam ang paghigop at pagkain nang chicken tinola. Thanks for the post. God bless you all always.
