How Motor Technology Makes Home Living More Convenient

Sometimes, when we hear the words “motor technology”, we picture an industrial setting similar to an automotive assembly line. And while cars indeed do have several motors in them, this is not the only way that motor technology has made our everyday lives more convenient.

In fact, almost every room in the house have an appliance or gadget that makes use of motors, like those found in RS Components’ array of motor control solutions. Here are just a few of the household appliances that make our day-to-day activities simpler–even enjoyable—thanks to motor technology.

Entertainment and Travel

Cars are the most obvious application of motors in your everyday life. From the power windows and seats, to the windshield wipers, the radiator, and the air-conditioning fans, automobiles are full of big and small motors that make travelling faster, safer, and more comfortable. And if you have automatic garage doors, you can also thank motor control for sparing you the effort of lifting or pushing to open up your parking space.

Meanwhile, computers and gaming consoles also use motors in their operations, specifically those in the disk drives and cooling fans. Even simple battery-operated toys have miniature motors that make them move or vibrate, much to the delight of children. For instance, remember Tickle-Me Elmo or the dancing Coca-Cola can? These are just two well-known examples of motorized toys!

Cleaning and Cooking

Most of the appliances we use to keep our homes clean are powered by electric motors. These include vacuum cleaners, leaf blowers, washing machines, clothes dryers, and dishwashers just to name a few. Vacuum cleaners, in particular, have come a long way from their simple function of sucking up dirt and dust from floors. From wet-or-dry vacuum cleaners that help clean liquid spills to independent robotic ones that can slip into the tightest spaces and programmed to clean at certain times (not to mention more quietly than traditional vacuums)—cleaning the house has never been easier or more fun because of these vacuum cleaners!

On the other hand, some people don’t like to cook not because they don’t know how but because chopping, slicing, and mixing can take so much of your time. Thanks to motorized appliances like blenders, food processors, juicers, and mixers, preparing food has become more convenient. And because you know exactly what and how much of an ingredient goes into your food, you also end up eating healthier, too.

Grooming and Personal Care

Using motorized grooming tools like an electric razor is not only faster, it’s also safer. After all, you don’t have to suffer from nicks, cuts, and razor burns due to uneven pressure that you sometimes end up applying with a manual razor. You also save on costs, since you don’t have to replace the blades every so often. And because you don’t have to throw away the razors after a few shaves, you also help make the environment cleaner, too.

For women, epilators are a more efficient option than shaving. Not only can one gadget be used on different parts of the body (although there are special epilators for the underarm and bikini areas), the results last longer, too, as the hair are pulled out from the roots.

Meanwhile, motorized electric toothbrushes may help you achieve better oral health, as they are equipped with pressure sensors that prevent you from brushing too hard (which can hurt your gums). There are also models with built-in timers to ensure that you achieve the dentist-recommended two minutes of brushing. Electric toothbrushes are also ideal for people who have arthritis or other health conditions that make it difficult to hold and use a manual toothbrush.

Home Maintenance and Safety

Power tools such as electric screwdrivers, drills, and nail guns are usually powered by micro motors that are not only lightweight for easier operation, but have high capacities for both speed and torque. There are also cordless models of these power tools, which can last up to 10 to 12 hours on full charge, making them even more convenient to use.

Motors also help keep our homes safer. Do you have electronic door locks? Chances are, the lock is operated by a small motor that engages and disengages the locking mechanism when the correct codes are inputted.

These are just a few ways that motor technology has made our lives easier. And with the way technology is evolving, there could be more motor-driven home solutions coming our way sooner than we think!
