Helpful Home Tips

There are many things in your house that can be used not for its main purpose alone. These things have hidden properties and can solve some problems that are less obvious in their capabilities. Below are very helpful tips that may be of help to you…

To keep the ants away, place the skin of cucumber near the place of ant holes. Cucumbers are one example of natural pest control. It’s using natural and generally non-toxic ingredients to repel or get rid of bugs including ants and other insects.

To make your mirror shine, clean it with spirit. Alcohol, nail polish remover and methylated spirit (denatured alcohol) have great cleaning properties. They can clean almost everything. Plus it eliminates germs for a very little cost.

To remove chewing gum from clothes, keep the cloth in the freezer for an hour. By hardening the gum through freezing stops it from sinking deeper into the cloth. Scrape it with knife once hard.

To give shine to your hair, wash it with 1 teaspoon vinegar then rinse. The vinegar will remove all the residue of different hair products and the scaly build up that accumulates in the shaft.

To avoid tears while cutting onions, chew gum. When you cut onion, it releases sulphur dioxide which make you cry. If you chew gum, the gum will absorb the sulfur fumes before it can react with your eyes.

To remove ink from clothes, put toothpaste on the ink spots generously and let it dry completely, then wash. The toothpaste acts as a very mild abrasive that will gently work away the ink stain on washable fabric.

To get rid of mice or rats, sprinkle black or cayenne pepper in places where there are mice or rats. Peppers are good rats and mice repellants because of its stinging odor.

To clean toilet and tiles, drop Alka-Seltzer tablets in the toilet, wait for 20 minutes then brush and flush. The citric acid and effervescent action clean vitreous china and tiles.

Why I Prefer Blinds Over Curtains

When we moved to our house, I did not have any second thought what to use for our windows. Blinds were my only choice. I agree that both blinds and curtains are ideal window decorations but I still prefer blinds because maintaining it is easy and painless. It only needs to be dusted and wiped down to remove the dirt while curtains need regular washing. No, I am not lazy. I was just too occupied and do not have much time to wash curtains.

If I am not mistaken, the blinds we are using now are our third set for 10 years. The first two sets were just plain-colored but the set we are using now have tiny dots. And now that blinds become popular, there are so many choices as to the materials, colors and designs. Even the roller blind which is ideal for offices, schools and buildings, can be also used at home with glass walls and wide glass windows. It is available in fabric types including flame retardant, blackout, din-out and glare reduction so it is easy to find the perfect blind for your needs. They are available in different sizes and can also be made to your exact requirements.

What I love most about the blinds are we have the privacy we need yet we are able to control the light while retaining the ability to see outdoors and giving our house a cozy look.

Designing Your Bathroom

Bathroom may be the smallest part of your house but it does not mean you cannot decorate it. Designing your bathroom can be fun. If your bathroom is big enough, you can decorate the wall with art works or framed pictures that can make your bathroom more elegant. You can also use double bathroom vanities and put wall lights on either sides of the vanity mirror. It will give your bathroom a classic appealing look.

What if you have small bathroom? Giving the illusion of space is a very effective way to enlarge a room. Use light colored tiles, wall and ceiling paints. It will generate an impression of bigger and taller room. Although royal blue and black tiles may look dazzling, it will definitely make your bathroom look a lot smaller than its actual size. A big mirror on the wall can also make the room look bigger and brighter.

De-clutter your bathroom by eliminating unimportant things. Instead of big shower rack, a hook at the back of your bathroom door can do the work for your towel. You can also use hanging rack for your unused towels and magazines. And to make your bathroom luxurious even if it is small, place scented candles and soaps on top of your vanity or on one corner of your tub. A small indoor plant can also give fresh feeling inside your bathroom.

Bathroom is not just a place to bathe or wash your hands. It can also be a place to relieve and unwind after a hard day’s work. A hot bubble bath while listening to warm music will help remove your stress.
