The World Book and Copyright Day Celebration

The National Book Development Board in partnership with Intellectual Property Philippines and Filipinas Herigate Library, conducted free seminars at Technoportal UP-AyalaLand last April 15, in celebration of the World Book and Copyright Day. Copyright issues such as negotiating points in author-publisher agreements, arbitration in copyright disputes, copyright issued when publishing on the web and plagiarism vs. copyright, were tackled in the morning. Too bad I missed the said discussions. I was lucky though to be available in the afternoon where the topics about web and blogging were discussed.

I was able to attend the “Making of the Bestseller:What Sells, What Does Not. It was a forum between authors, publishers and readers on what sells, what readers want to read, and what makes a bestseller. As Sidney Sheldon’s huge fan, I was surprised to know that what sells are adult fictions about paranormal, vampires, Greek mythology and beastly that is why Stephen King’s novels are one of the longest running bestsellers according to Jennifer Javier of Simon and Schuster. On the hand, according to Jun Balde of National Bookstore, books that are humurous yet inspirational are bestsellers too. That explains why Bob Ong’s books remain on the top of those books from Filipino authors.

I was also able to attend the “Publishing on the Web” where panelists bloggers were supposed to share how to turn online writing into a profitable pastime. This is my most awaited so I was a little disappointed when it did not turn out as I expected it to be. Iwa Wilwayco, the blogger who was supposed to give tips as to how we can earn through online publishing was not able to attend.

There was also a forum about “Food and Travel Writing”. It was great to hear some tips about the expert bloggers of food and travel most especially from Ms. Kristine Fonacier of Lonely Planet Philippines. She’s soft-spoken yet very witty and articulate.

One more good thing about the said event was, there was also acitivities for the kids so I tagged along my daughter RJ, my niece and nephew. They enjoyed the Book Illustration Workshop conducted by Adarna House.

All in all, it was a great event. I learned a lot of things about blogging…that it is more important to post with substance and blog with dignity and credibility. Most of all I got the chance to meet some of the Mommies of PMC.
