Understanding the Basics of a Speaker

Ohms, amps and watts…are these familiar to you? If you have ears attuned to great sound and music, then most probably these things are important to you when buying speakers. I know because I accompanied my husband once when he bought celestion speakers for our home theater.

My husband is a music enthusiast and a fan of great movies, actions movies specifically. When watching action movies, he wants to marvel not only with the images on the TV screen but also with the sound. He wants it loud that you can feel the vibration though the floor under your feet. For him, speaker is very important in the overall quality of the stereo or home theatre system so it is worth the time to assimilate the specs aside from choosing the brand of course. According to him, it is important for the speakers to have great receivers. The ohms and watts of the speakers should match for it to give great sound quality. To be honest, I don’t understand what ohms and watts are, same with amps and frequency response. We probably had these lessons in high school but I was not listening then. So for me to understand my husband and these basics of a speaker fully, I made some research.

Ohm is the unit of measure for impedance. Impedance is the property of a speaker that restricts the flow of electrical current through it. When the ohm is too low, it will result to poor tone. When it is too high it can damage the amp.

Amps or ampere is the current of electricity. It is important to know the voltage of a speaker and how many amps its circuitry is designed to carry.

Watts are the amount of energy a device uses when it is in use. A speaker has a wattage rating label. For example, a typical speaker can handle up to 100 watts. Anything above 100 watt will distort the sound or worst, will permanently damage the speaker.

These are only the basics of a speaker but still my simple mind finds it very confusing. Do I really need to understand these specs or should I trust my ears?

Reminded me of a fellow blogger’s blog; Ohms and Volts, so I’m quite familiar πŸ˜€ I love music too but I only go as far as that hihi, kanta lang…Ahaha, so true for the boys, they always want loud sound effects and all, when playing rpgs or watching movies, even my kids when playing angry birds :/

this is a good read now i can relate to the family discussion, i know nothing about speakers, it was my husband and 2 sons who bought the home theatre speakers that surrounds our home, when they watch movies, i can hear it whenever i am ahaha.

Oh, may factors pala talaga yun para ma-achieve ang magandang sound quality. Hubby is a guitarist and he’s the one in charged of the speakers in the house kaya no idea ako about diyan hahaha. Sa equalizer na lang ako.

I remember studying them when I was in college. A good refresher course. Thanks for sharing. πŸ™‚
