You Reap What You Sow: Growing Loyalty and Concern in Your Employees

Having employees who are loyal and have genuine concern for the company will make the business easier to manage. A high employee turnover rate could actually be more costly in the areas of training, skill proficiency, and efficiency. While some job positions can be easily filled without worrying about a period of adjustment in the replacement, there are positions that are best held by employees who have been with the company for a long.

When you show genuine concern for your employees, they will show the same concern for the company. This is not to say that you should shower them with all the employee benefits around. Fair and equitable treatment is the first thing that your employees should expect from you. Their respect for you as their employer and their concern for the company as their source of income will come from knowing that their efforts are duly recognized and their contributions to the company are acknowledged. Examine your business and see whether you are doing your part in sowing the seeds of employee loyalty and concern.

You have to make sure that you provide a decent working environment. Your office or work area does not have to be in the biggest commercial area with all the amenities available for your employees. You simply have to provide an environment that makes your employees feel comfortable while they are working. The work environment that you provide should not expose your employees to unnecessary risk. If there are job-related risks, your employees should be trained to handle these risks and safety devices should be on-hand to prevent injuries.
You also need to make sure that you are paying your employees what’s due them. There are industry studies that show standard pay scales for specific job positions and levels. Employees often feel that they are doing more than they are paid for. At the extreme end of the spectrum are those employees who feel that they are exploited by the companies that they work for. The pay that you offer should be commensurate to the work that they do for you.

There are also non-monetary benefits that you can give to your employees. Some of these include group medical and life insurance benefits, paid vacations, and free meals or lodging facilities. Don’t forget to give recognition awards and incentives too. You want your employees to strive to be top performers and you want our top performers to keep on exceeding their targets for from month to month.
