Why are Accountants and Bookkeepers in such great demand?

According to the Australian Government’s Job Outlook platform, accountants, accounting clerks, auditors and bookkeepers have a stable to strong future growth in Australia. This can be predominantly attributed to the specially developed skills and knowledge required to become a qualified accountant or bookkeeper and the shortage of qualified professionals in the industry.

Education requirements

Many in the accounting industry have to go through years of training to ensure they are equipped with the knowledge and skills required to be effective in their roles. Many of our students who are learning to become a bookkeeper with edna.edu.au have also mentioned how much they are learning about the industry and how they foresee being in the industry is going to help them go places with their future careers.

There are varying levels of education for those wanting to work in the industry. If you are aiming to become an Accounts Administrator, all you need is a Certificate III in Accounts Administration. If you aspire to become a bookkeeper, you will need a minimum of a Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping. Accountants, especially specialist accountants will need a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Various universities have different names for the course. For example, RMIT calls their accounting program – Bachelor of Business (Accounting) whilst Deakin University calls their accounting program – Bachelor of Commerce.

About a decade ago, all these courses had to be undertaken face-to-face and it had a very rigid course structure. These days, majority of these courses can be undertaken as online courses or on-campus, are pretty flexible in terms of swapping an elective unit for another, and are much more affordable than they previously were.

5 Tips for Job Seekers

There is more to looking for a job than making sure your CV is tailored and tidy. There are a number of other tips you can utilise to give yourself the best possible chance of landing a great and fulfilling job.

job seeker

1. Enlist the Help of a Recruitment Agency

It’s important to understand that not all jobs are openly advertised. Some of the very best positions are entrusted to recruitment agencies and specialised organisations such as SmartWorker who look for staff with the skills, experience, knowledge and qualifications required. Different recruitment organisations specialise in recruiting staff for particular sectors and industries. If you have specialised skills – such as IT, sales, office administration or retail – seek out a recruiter that specialises in matching candidates with jobs in your specialty area.

2. Don’t be Afraid to Ask for Advice

When it comes to job-seeking, it’s more than okay to ask others for advice. Building relationships and opening up channels of communication with the people you would like to work with is a great strategy for learning more about the field and deciding on the professional direction you want to take. By making such in-roads, you may even find that you are front of mind when a job opening comes about at a company you would love to work for.

3. Following Your Passion is not Essential

Following your passion is good advice for some people, but it doesn’t apply to everyone. Many successful and happy professionals did not forge a career doing something they love or are passionate about. To the contrary, many of these professionals discovered that their passion for their work developed with the passing of time and as they improved, grew in confidence and felt an increased sense of control over their career.

The best tip here is certainly not to completely ignore your passions, but be open to other areas and opportunities in which your passion, enthusiasm and confidence may grow.

4. Be Proactive in Creating your own Position

It’s unlikely that your dream job will come and find you. There is great value in studying in the field or industry that you would like to transition into and pinpointing a company for which you would like to work. When you take this approach, you have the opportunity to understand the challenges that the company faces and craft a solution for them that can be shared.

5. Listen Well

As a job seeker, you need to be a skilled listener. Avoid getting caught up in the process of looking for a job and instead learn to listen. The ability to listen effectively and knowing when to talk is tremendously important on both professional and personal levels. Similarly, it’s wise to be attuned to when questions should be asked.

If you are a job seeker and keen to secure work quickly, remember that it’s just as important to know that an industry, organisation or role is compatible with you and what you want for your professional future. Apply these strategies to assist you to find a fulfilling, interesting and enjoyable role.

Tips to Help Current Engineer Students Become Successful

A study by the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA found that many engineer students are destined to become major leaders in the U.S. workforce. However, before an engineer student can become a major leader of a high-profile company, the necessary training must be successfully completed. This can be a tall order for a student to achieve, but there are some tips that they can use to become all that they can be.

engineer students

Find Help From Charitable Organizations

The first step for individuals who are still trying to become engineer students is to find charitable organizations that can help them get into the program of their dreams. One such group is the Phillips Charitable Organization, which was founded by Charles Phillips. This group provides opportunities and assistance to U.S Military veterans, single parents and engineering students.

Know Who Inspires You

The next step for engineer students is to accurately identify who inspires them. Then they can go on a mission to find out what makes that person tick. For example, let’s say that someone loves Microsoft products. A good person to look up to would be Bill Gates. Paying attention to what he did in his life can provide valuable stepping stones for engineering students.

Build a Portfolio

Students can always benefit from building a portfolio of projects on which they have worked. To build a successful portfolio, they have to get hands-on experience and participate in every opportunity that they can. Having a well-balanced portfolio is a great way to impress a prospective employer once schooling is over. Also, getting hands-on experience means that they are much more likely to retain the information that they learn instead of just reading it from a book.

Get Involved With Teams

Learn to work in teams because this will be beneficial in the corporate world. This includes getting involved with organizations at school. If at all possible, learn to lead these teams either as the official leader or by example. Doing so can prepare students for leadership roles once they enter into the workplace. It also gives them a chance to further develop their leadership roles.

Making it in the business world can be intimidating. However, following these steps can give engineer students the head start that they need to make it in the cooperate world. Students also need to learn the value of networking. To become a leader, it’s not all about what a person knows, but who they know. They should attend lectures and always introduce themselves to the speaker.

These Obstacles are Preventing You From Pursuing Your Passion

Everybody has something to say. If you feel that there are obstacles blocking you from achieving success, you’re not alone. Most people find it easier to daydream about their passion than to actually pursue it. Here’s how get over those obstacles.

1. There isn’t enough time.

Everyone has the same hours in each day. Pursuing your passion isn’t about having more time, it’s about making the most of the time you have. When you only focus on the things that matter, you’ll manage to fit everything in. Think of the 80/20 rule, which says that most things in life aren’t evenly distributed. What can you work on for 20% of the time that will make an 80% change?

2. There isn’t enough money.

For starters, there’s plenty of advice out there about managing your money, so if you’re having trouble budgeting or saving, educate yourself about money management. Also, practice paying yourself first. Keep 15% of each paycheck for yourself. If you’re working toward being able to pursue your passion, put that money away until you’ve saved some up.

3. You don’t have tons of ideas.

At times, you won’t have many great ideas, which is especially daunting if your passion is creative. When this happens, it’s important to get out and live. When you do new things, meet new people, explore, learn, and experience life, you’ll be inspired to create. For some inspiration, check out Stephen A Wynn’s slides.

4. You’re in this alone.

Often, passions are solo work, which can make it difficult to move forward when the going gets rough. Creativity can be lonely and isolation can hinder a person’s productivity. Luckily, there are a lot of creative people in the world and there are plenty of ways to connect with them. Connect with the people you admire on social media, attend meet-ups and networking events, and be approachable whenever you’re out and about.

5. You doubt yourself.

A lot of people feel that they’re not good enough at whatever they want to do. “I’m not good enough!” is a very dangerous sentence. Don’t underestimate your voice. Don’t assume that you have to be the very best at your craft in order to pursue it. If everyone believed their negative self-talk, nobody would move forward with their amazing ideas.

6. Your work isn’t getting attention right away.

When you pursue a passion, you’re vulnerable. The process is more important than the result. Engage with other people and eventually they’ll notice your work.

Consider the tasks that are wasting your time. Stop getting caught up in nonessential parts of the everyday. Learn how to prioritize. You’ll begin to find room for your passions and you’ll be a happier person overall.

Are You a Good Leader for Your Business?

Running a business is not an easy task – rather it is a series of tasks, each of which must be done to your best ability. This article asks whether you can lead your business in the best possible way.

Few people are born as terrific leaders. Some are undoubtedly better at leading than others, but even then these people develop their skills through time so they become better as they go on.

What type of person are you? Do you want to lead your business or would you rather settle into the background and follow others instead?

leadership development

If you’d rather be at the forefront of activities you should look into leadership development. This is designed to help you develop any inherent skills you have in this area, as well as encouraging you to develop new ones.

A good leader will be a strong person who stands out above the crowd and knows how to take control of a specific situation. This comes naturally to some people but it doesn’t always lead to good results. The more you can learn about leading a group of people, the more successful you are likely to be when you set out to actually do it.

So, let’s examine how you can find out whether you are a good leader or not. Firstly, do you step forward for roles when they are offered or shy away in the corner? Leadership isn’t for everyone and that’s fine. We aren’t all cut out for this role. However it can also make a big difference how you act even when you are not offered the chance to step up and try bigger roles. It helps enormously to take on more within your current job, even if you are not asked to do so.

Perhaps, one of the most important things to be aware of is the need to be able to develop as a leader in more than one way. For instance, you need to be good at connecting with people. You also need to be good at identifying the best traits in other people and using those traits for the overall good of the business. Leadership development looks into areas such as these and helps a would-be leader enhance their skills in lots of different ways.

It is also important to note that developing as a leader is important no matter what state your business is in. If times are tough and you’re in the middle of a recession with falling sales, you need to utilise very different skills from the ones you would normally use when times are good. This is all good experience though – experience one can easily use to enhance his/her own skills to use in other ways in the future.

As you can see, leadership steers and guides every business to success and to failure in certain conditions. The better you are at leading your business, the more likely it is you will achieve far more over time.
