Spread the Love in the Workplace

It’s the month of hearts and it’s time to spread some love. Cheesy as it might sound, you might want to spread some love in the workplace and make it a happier place to work at. It is easy to get caught up with all the piles of paperwork, the battery of meetings, and the long hours of overtime work. A little TLC spread in the workplace will give your employees just enough push to want to keep on going, going, and going.

Be generous with praise – a little pat on the back every now and then or a small note to commend an employee for a job well done is always appreciated. Make sure it is sincere. You do not want your employees to feel like your buttering them up for some underhanded ulterior motive. Honest compliments and acknowledgement will show your employees that their efforts are being noticed. This will encourage them to do more and work towards advancing in their career within your organization.

The little things count too – you might not think much of installing a coffeemaker in your employee lounge, but ordinary employees do appreciate a place where they can be comfortable when they take their breaks. Having the basic equipment like a coffeemaker, a microwave oven, and maybe even a small snack bar will save your employees from making a trip down your building and around the corner to the local coffee shop.

Show compassion – remember that your employees are humans. They need rest too. Do not be overly demanding in terms of work hours, sick days, and vacations. This does not, in any way, increase productivity. It is a given that you have to observe standards in terms of number of sick days and vacation leaves, lest some employees take advantage of these to slack off. Give your employees room to live their lives outside of the workplace. A good work-life balance has been proven to result in better productivity and more motivated employees.

Assure Fairness within the Workplace

Ensuring that your workplace is fair for all employees is vital for a thriving business. When each employee feels valued, they will maximize productivity, and work harder for their company. In most cases, it is easier to talk about fairness then actually implement it into your workplace, which requires changing the workings of your workplace in most cases.

Be Open

Talk to your employees about their pay, and make sure they understand why they are paid what they are paid. Also make it clear what they can do to increase their pay, or gain a promotion. This makes it fair across all employees, as they all have the opportunity to work their way up to a higher position.

Favoritism

Be very careful not to favorite certain employees. This will make other employees feel that they are not as valued, and will not come across as fair. Try to treat the whole team evenly, and if there is employees who are more qualified than others, consider how to even out the skills across your workforce. Business mentors often find that bosses don’t realize they are doing this, so watching videos or reading books on their findings can be helpful to identify if this is a problem in your workplace.

Allow Employees to Solve Problems

Some workplaces, especially smaller workplaces, can create an environment where workers both approach the employer with the same problem, but individually. They hope to play the employer to get the result that they wish. This practice should be greatly discouraged – ask the employees to communicate openly with each other and reach an agreement on how to best solve the problem. This reduces the appearance of favoritism, and creates a more functional workplace.

Know the Rules

Every employer will face difficult legislation at some point, whether its regarding confidentiality or the Americans with Disabilities act. Make sure you fully understand these before commenting to avoid any misguided response appearing as favoritism. Share Management

Let your employees do something important every once in a while. Send someone to a meeting in your place, or let someone else give a presentation. By sharing the management, you’ll give the impression of a fair manager, and a very open workplace.
